Keeping Your Workplace Clutter Free
Whether you are working from home or working from an office, a clear workspace will help clear your mind and therefore improve your productivity. Although it may seem like a chore, just spending a few minutes getting your office space organised will make it much easier to tackle the day ahead.
If you simply don’t know where to start with decluttering your desk then you might want to carry on reading as we have put some tips together for you.
1. Everything needs a home
This may sound obvious, but rather than cluttering your desk with notebooks, pens and lots of stationery you need to give everything its own home. For your pens try a pen pot or mug, paper trays or organisers for your notebooks and even small tupperware for miscellaneous items. Of course if you have desk drawers then that is a bonus, but don’t be tempted to just chuck everything in them so they are out of sight. Make sure you have dividers in the drawers so your bits and bobs have a home.
2. Get rid of those messy cables
Loose cables and wires can actually make a workplace look incredibly messy, and it is quite a simple fix. There are lots of cable management tools out there, and they aren’t too expensive either. You can get some boxes that have a small cable hole in them so you can condense the large clumps of tangled cables and keep them out of sight. Another good hack is to snap binder clips onto the back of your desk and loop your monitor or laptop chargers through them.
3. Expand your space (if you can)
This doesn’t mean buy a bigger desk so that you have even more room to make a mess of! Think outside of the box here and make a better use of the space that you have. Could you raise your monitors so they take up less space on your desk? Do you have any space under your desk where your printer could live? And those piles of post-it-notes that you have scattered all over your desk… why not put those on a clipboard? Or better still, invest in a whiteboard and help save the trees too!
4. Simplify your clutter
We all have those small but necessary items cluttering our desks up – from paper clips to staplers, scissors and more. Of course they are essential for working, but they do take up precious desk space. You might want to try popping magnets on these items and then hanging them on a magnetized whiteboard. Or even clip them onto a peg board. Any way that you can keep them off your desk really!
5. Use a spice rack
Ok, bear with us on this one. For those with limited drawer space, a spice rack could be exactly what you need. You can pop all sorts into the glass jars – rubber bands, push pins, paper clips, all of those little things that are really hard to find a home for. Just make sure that you wash the glass jars out properly otherwise your home office may start to smell a bit funky!
